A mixed-use development that will include self-storage is in the works for a 1-acre empty site in Charlotte, N.C. The property on Seventh Street is in a largely wooded area, near Interstate 277 and a condominium complex. It’s owned by Trinity Episcopal School, according to the source.
The six-story building will comprise 126,000 square feet of space and include 1,000 climate-controlled storage units, according to Joe Teague, an attorney representing the developers. Space for cafes, offices and retail shops will be located on the ground floor. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter.
Teague declined to name the developer, which also has similar projects being developed on or near Central Avenue, College Street and West Morehead Street, according to the source.
A rule change by the Charlotte City Council last year has opened the door to self-storage development on sites zoned for mixed-use urban development. To qualify, the buildings must have at least 50 percent of the ground floor devoted to “active” uses, such as office or retail, the source reported.
