TopCity Sports & Storage has opened a mixed-use project in Topeka, Kan., that currently offers self-storage units and will eventually also feature an indoor-sports facility. Phase one of the project, focusing on temperature-controlled storage space, is now open, while the sports component will be built down the line. The company intends to target local sport teams, marketing the complex as a place where coaches can hold practices and store equipment, according to a press release.

The property at 4600 S. Topeka Blvd. will use SecurGuard, an electronic smart-entry system from Janus International, which supplies building solutions and technology for the self-storage industry. The system allows customers to access the property and their individual self-storage units using their smartphones.

TopCity believes the system’s digital key-sharing feature is perfect for sports-team users. “The goal of our unique site plan is that coaches and teammates can come to TopCity and store their equipment in the climate-controlled units. With the advanced technology, coaches will be able to share keys with others on the team, then come to our indoor sports complex to hold practice and put equipment back into units,” company officials said. “This means coaches don’t have to lug around all the equipment. We are excited for our indoor turf facility to come to fruition in the near future.”

TopCity offers drive-up and temperature-controlled self-storage as well as parking for boats, cars and RVs. Property amenities include 24-hour access, upgraded security and online billpay. Only four miles from Washburn University, the site serves the communities of Auburn, Burlingame and Pauline.
