Small Plane Crashes Into Roof of Winder, GA, Self-Storage Facility

Article-Small Plane Crashes Into Roof of Winder, GA, Self-Storage Facility

A small plane crashed into the roof of Barrow Mini-Warehouses in Winder, Georgia, on Saturday. The single-engine aircraft was attempting to land at the adjacent Barrow County Airport when it struck a post near the runway around 11:30 a.m., causing it to hurtle into the self-storage facility at 1048 Atlanta Highway S.E. Two people were on board the plane. One was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, while the other reportedly refused to be treated, according to a source.

Photos shared by the fire department indicate the plane struck the roof of one metal building, leaving a hole in the structure. “Upon arrival of firefighters, we found a small aircraft that was upside down beside one of the storage warehouses,” Barrow County Emergency Services Capt. Scott Dakin told a source. “The aircraft had hit the roof of the warehouse and flipped over, coming to a rest alongside the building.”

Responders also detected and stopped a fuel leak coming from the aircraft.

The incident is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, a source reported. It’s unclear whether the crash was recorded by any of the facility’s security cameras.

Barrow is comprised of several single-story self-storage buildings, plus outdoor storage for vehicles.
