A man was killed late Saturday after what is believed to be a meth-lab operation ignited inside a Nashville, Tenn., self-storage unit. The unidentified person was visiting the CubeSmart facility at 5916 Robertson Ave. He likely wasn’t living there, sources reported.

After extinguishing the blaze, investigators discovered gas cans, ammunition and Iodine around the unit, all of which are components of a meth lab, according to Kendra Loney, a spokesperson with the Nashville Fire Department. Crews recorded high levels of hazardous materials, which prevented investigators from entering the building on Sunday. The structure is being ventilated until the levels drop, Loney said.

It’s unknown how many units were damaged by the blaze, but the building contains between 50 to 75 spaces. Fire crews struggled to contain the fire because it affected interior and exterior units, according to sources.

CubeSmart is a self-storage real estate investment trust that owns or manages 1,230 self-storage facilities across the United States. Its operating portfolio comprises nearly 80 million square feet.
