Article-Illegal Residency Causes Fire at Reading, PA, Self-Storage Facility

A fire that began inside a Reading, Pa., self-storage unit yesterday morning was likely started by a couple who were living in the space, which is against the law. Fire crews responded at 5:30 a.m. to Route 625 Storage at 824 New Holland Road, where they found flames coming out of the space and spreading to adjacent units, according to the source.

The couple was awake enough to exit the space unharmed. Their unit was destroyed, while two others suffered extensive damage, said Jeremy Searfoss, fire marshal for the Reading Fire Department.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation. The damage is estimated at more than $30,000.

Route 825 Storage is owned by Berks Storage, which operates five facilities in Berks County, Pa., under various names. In addition to storage, the properties provide moving and packing supplies, truck rentals, and vehicle storage.
