GREENspot DROPoff, an electronic-waste collector that offers a free recycling program through self-storage facilities, has partnered with the city of Houston and CompuCycle, a certified e-waste recycler, to create a comprehensive stewardship program for residents in the metro area. The program will include participation from local self-storage operator Amazing Spaces Storage Centers, whose facilities have already served as GREENspot DROPoff e-waste recycling locations for more than a year. Houston Mayor Annise Parker held a press conference last week to announce the new partnership.

To date, Amazing Spaces four Houston locations have collected a combined 92,439 pounds of e-waste from items like old computers and televisions, preventing potentially harmful materials from being dumped in local landfills and streams, company officials said in a press release.

The communities we serve are thrilled that they can easily drop off their old electronics at any of our four locations with the knowledge that their e-waste will be recycled in a safe way, rather than go into a landfill, potentially releasing toxic chemicals into the environment, said Kathy Tautenhahn, vice president of Amazing Spaces. Over the past year, since we started the program, weve heard overwhelmingly positive feedback from the people who have taken advantage of our e-waste drop-off option. We are happy that our partnership with GREENspot DROPoff provides the community this much needed service.

Under the partnership program, CompuCycle will pick up e-waste material to be processed at its facility once enough electronic drop-offs accumulate. The companys R2 certification means it complies with strict guidelines during the recycle process, including ensuring secure data destruction, managing materials that pose a threat to the environment and worker safety, and practicing the remarketing and reuse of retired electronics, company officials said.

E-waste items collected at Amazing Spaces facilities through the GREENspot program include computer keyboards and monitors, DVD players, electronic cords and cables, fax machines, hard drives, laptop computers, radios, stereo components, televisions and more.

Open since 1998, Amazing Spaces currently operates four locations in Greater Houston. In addition to being e-waste drop-off centers, the properties provide self-storage, RV and boat storage, wine storage, packing and moving supplies, and Penske truck rentals.
