Self Storage Development Group (SSDG) is converting an existing building in Charleston, S.C., to a new self-storage facility that will operate as Universal Storage Solutions. Expected to be complete in August, the property will be managed by Universal Storage Group (USG), an Atlanta-based self-storage management firm.
The facility at 2076 Wambaw Creek Drive will include more than 540 climate-controlled units, 20 rental offices, a breakroom and a conference area. Security features will include keypad access, perimeter fencing and video cameras. The property will also offer truck rentals.
The conversion of the structure to self-storage will involve the addition of new elevators, mechanical systems and a reception area. The facility will feature LED lighting as well as a rooftop solar-panel system that will provide 80 percent of the building’s energy needs, according to a company press release.
“Growing demand for climate-controlled units in the Daniel Island, Cainhoy and the Mount Pleasant area has led us to develop this facility to meet the specific needs of local customers,” said SSDG CEO Albert Heyward. “The office rentals will particularly appeal to businesses needing flexible onsite storage, and the month-to-month rental availability makes them extremely competitive vs. more traditional lease options.”
Headquartered in Charleston, SSDG specializes in self-storage development. The company is led by Heyward, who has more than 35 years of experience in the self-storage industry as president of The Heyward Group as well as co-founder and chief date officer for USG.
