Self-Storage in the Holiday Spirit: Charity Wrap-Up for 12/07/2011

Article-Self-Storage in the Holiday Spirit: Charity Wrap-Up for 12/07/2011

Self-storage operators around the nation are getting into the holiday spirit by kicking off various charity drives.

Atlanta-based Storage Post Self Storage is partnering with two Louisiana food banks to collect food for at-risk families. The companys facilities in southern Louisiana are collecting donations for Second Harvest Food Bank, which serves about 263,000 people through 240 non-profit and faith-based agencies across 23 south Louisiana parishes.

Storage Post's facility on Tom Drive in Baton Rouge is a collection site for bagged, canned and boxed food donations for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. The non-profit organization provides food to more than 120 charitable agencies operating food pantries, group homes, shelters, meal sites and special agencies. Donations for both charities will be collected through the end of December.

Chicago self-storage provider LifeStorage is celebrating the holiday season with multiple December events and collecting donations for various charities. Dec. 3 was Share A Cookie Day, where visitors received a free cookie. On Tuesday, LifeStorage locations launched a week-long Mitten Tree Event, where every location will collect mittens, coats, scarves and other winter clothing for local charities. On Dec. 13, all LifeStorage locations are participating in National Cocoa Day, when visitors can stop by their local LifeStorage for a free cup of hot cocoa.

This holiday season, we've had some great promotions and even better, many of our stores have helped out some great causes, like raising toys for Toys for Tots, food for The Frankfort Township Food Pantry and The Pantry of Rich Township, and coats for Cornerstone Community outreach, said Michelle Wight, LifeStorage district manager. With the Mitten Tree Event, each store will have the opportunity to raise clothing for those without during the colder months, which just further helps us as a company cement our reputation as a business that really does care about giving back to our communities.

Access Self Storage in Dallas is hosting its second annual Community Christmas Party, Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. As part of its community-enrichment program, the facility, 3241 S. Buckner Blvd., is inviting friends and neighbors out for an afternoon of food, games and Christmas fun. We love getting everybody out for Christmas. Its fun to take a little break and play some games, said owner Doug Hunt.

Visitors will enjoy a variety of activities including a cookie-decorating contest, photos with Santa, and a raffle to win Christmas lawn decorations or a 32-inch television. Each raffle ticket costs five non-perishable food items, which will be donated to the Pleasant Grove Food Pantry.

Somersworth Storage LLC in Somersworth, N.H., is holding a food drive and raffle to support the Community Food Pantry Program. Food donations will be collected at Somersworth Storage, 240 Route 108, through Dec. 22. For every donation, a raffle ticket will be issued for the chance to win a 32-inch TV. The raffle will be held Dec. 22.

What Tenants Can't Store: Self-Storage Talk Erupts with Praise of Facilities Who Display, Enforce Their Rules

Article-What Tenants Can't Store: Self-Storage Talk Erupts with Praise of Facilities Who Display, Enforce Their Rules

Off the top of my head, I can think of a handful of items that should never be put into self-storage: human beings or animals; perishable food items; hazardous or highly combustible materials; and myriad others. Common sense should prevent tenants from attempting to lock up this stuff in their units, but as any manager can tell you, that's not the case. That's why Self-Storage Talk, the largest online community in the industry, currently features a thread called "I Love This: Specific Things You Can't Store."

The thread began with moderator MamaDuke giving praise to member Storage Dunstable. Storage Dunstable had posted a link to the facility website on another thread, and MamaDuke, after reading that thread and visiting Storage Dunstable's website, was so impressed with Storage Dunstable's list of things tenants can't store that she started a separate thread to express her joy. One of the key functions of SST is to show some love to industry peers when they do something admirable. But even more important, by highlighting this list, MamaDuke has pointed all members to a resource they can use. This resource-sharing concept is an invaluable benefit to the forum. Member A Space Place Storage replied with, "Wow, very interesting. We should have a big poster that states all this and keep in our office to remind our customers not to store these items." Then other posters started posted concerns that tenants won't read a "you can't store these" sign anyway, so it may not be worth having. In either case, Storage Dunstable's strategy to post a clear list on its website and, presumably, provide to new tenants, is a strong one.

Want to find more useful resources on SST or perhaps post some of your own? If so, register your free username by visiting www.selfstoragetalk.com and clicking on "register." The sign-up process is easy and takes only a few minutes. Once you're logged in, make sure to check out the Resource Center, where you can upload and download various documents and marketing materials.

U-Haul Centers Offer Free Self-Storage to Victims of CA Windstorms

Article-U-Haul Centers Offer Free Self-Storage to Victims of CA Windstorms

U-Haul self-storage facilities in eastern Los Angeles, San Bernardino and San Fernando Valley are offering 30 days of free self-storage to residents whose homes or businesses have been damaged by the recent windstorms in Southern California.

Residents can use U-Hauls U-Box portable storage to store belongings in a secure warehouse or deliver them to a location of their choice.

Customers can also take advantage of the U-Haul Take a Box, Leave a Box Program. The program enables customers to return their reusable boxes and allows others to take them as needed for free. U-Haul encourages anyone who has any type of reusable box to drop it off at the nearest U-Haul location instead of throwing it into a recycling bin.

Residents needing more information can contact participating U-Haul centers in Charter Oaks, Covina, East Pasadena, Garey Avenue, Gendora, Holt Avenue, Pasadena and Valley Boulevard.

"These severe windstorms have caused power outages and tremendous amounts of damage to the communities we serve," said Matt McFarren, U-Haul area district vice president. "I hope this effort will help provide some assistance to the many residents that need a helping hand."

Body Found in Maine Self-Storage Unit Identified

Article-Body Found in Maine Self-Storage Unit Identified

Police in Lewiston, Maine, have identified a body found in a freezer in a self-storage unit in October.

DNA testing showed the body is that of Kitty Wardwell, who disappeared in 1983. The last person Wardwell was seen with was her former boyfriend, Frank Julian. The storage unit at Moore Self Storage had been rented to Julian, who died Oct. 1 at age 80, since 1992.

Members of Julians family were cleaning out the storage unit when they discovered the remains. Investigators found evidence at the scene that led them to believe the body might be Wardwells. The Maine Medical Examiner's Office determined Wardwell's death was a homicide, but the cause is not being made public due to the ongoing investigation.

Wardwell was first reported missing by a friend. She was 29 at the time of her disappearance. Julian told investigators in 1983 that he had left Wardwell at a motel after the couple had a fight. At the time, police believed Wardwell may have been the victim of foul play.
