Halloween Humanitarian Award

Article-Halloween Humanitarian Award

This year's Halloween Humanitarian award goes to Stor-It-For-Ya Self-Storage in Transylvania, Ore. The facility has offered the use of several large units for a local bat sanctuary to house animals in need. The colony was recently ousted from its cave during the construction of a new mountainside resort. The homeless bats then sought refuge in residents' attics, eaves and garages.

"We started getting calls about bats in peoples' homes," said Abigail Sinister, director of Bat Haven Wildlife Preserve. "There's still a lot of misinformation about these animals out there, and the community was working itself into a panic. We had to do somethingfast."

Sinister first called the Transylvania Zoo, but the organization was unable to assist. "The zoo had just taken in a rare exhibit of cave-dwelling nerocrombers. It's well-known these creatures feed on bats, so co-habitation was out of the question," Sinister mused. It was then she turned to local storage facilities in hopes of finding shelter. The high-ceiling units used for records and RV storage are an ideal space for simulating a bat's natural environment, she said.

Stor-It-For Ya stepped up to the plate, and even offered to help Sinister install roosts and an exit shaft in the units' roof.

"We're extremely pleased to help the local colony, said facility co-owner Justin Coffin. "We have often enjoyed watching the bats' evening flightnow we'll get to see it up-close and personal."

Coffin and his sister, Sarah Strange, have owned the site for what seems like a hundred years, he said. The siblings frequently contribute to community-service efforts like the annual blood drive. "It's just our way of giving back to the town that has given us so much," said Coffin. "We hope our new bat shelter will be a real scream for tenants."

Frightfully Good Stuff

Article-Frightfully Good Stuff

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore ...

~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~~*~

It's the weekend before Hallowe'en, and I wonder how many of you will be flitting about in costume, drinking punch filled with dry ice and overdosing on miniature Snickers bars? Ah, it's a magickal time, and particularly so for me. Not only will I celebrate my second wedding anniversary on Tuesday, but tomorrow begins the first real vacation I've had in ... in ... well let's just say it's been a long time.

But before I embark on my week of hedonistic abandon, I thought I'd fill you in on some cool things you'll see happening on the Inside Self-Storage website in my absence. Yes, I arranged things that way just for you. Consider it the best treat you'll get in your virtual candy bag!

First, we've just made available our November e-book titled "Self-Storage Finance: Show Me the Funding!" Click here to download this free goodie.

This week, we enjoyed hosting a webinar on self-storage site layout with presenter and sponsor Trachte Building Systems. If you missed this free online event or would like to watch the replay, you can access the on-demand version here.

In addition, the new online version of ISS magazine will be available on Nov. 1; and it includes not one but TWO web-exclusive articles that none of our subscribers have yet seen! Check them out to learn more about the world of self-storage finance, which was November's editorial focus. You can always find our web edition by visiting www.insideselfstorage.com and clicking on the "ISS Magazine" link in the left-hand menu or the cover thumbnail at the top right of the page.

While I'm away, I've also invited two special guest bloggers to entertain you in this space: ISS magazine editor Kimberly Hundley and managing editor Drew Whitney. They'll keep you apprised of happenings on the print side of things. Nothing like adding a little "fresh blood" to the blog during Halloween week, eh?

Finally, I've planned a little surprise. Check the blog on Tuesday morning for a holiday news story that's sure to be deflightful. (You'll see what I mean.)

So be safe out there, kids. Watch out for the ghouls, goblins and other things that bump in the nightespecially if the sound is coming from inside a storage unit!

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming.
And the lamplight o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be liftednevermore!

Get on the Crime Watch Circuit

Article-Get on the Crime Watch Circuit

We're just a week away from the best holiday of the year. (Really. I looked it up. It's a scientific fact!) Unfortunately, Halloween also tends to incite mischief in troublemakers of all ages. Last year, on the day after the event, my husband and I awoke to discover some vandals had disassembled our decorative skull fencing in the middle of the night and used it to create a gigantic Swastika on our front lawn. THAT was entertaining.

Storage facilities are frequently the victims of pranks and what-notat any time of year. This is one of the drawbacks of a business that involves low traffic, low activity, low manpower and a lot of privacy. In the upcoming week, I caution storage operators to be extra vigilant. You're not likely to escape every smashed pumpkin or can of Silly String, but with a little extra effort, you should be able to avoid serious damage such as collapsed fences and shrubbery, spray-can art andworsedented doors, cut locks and break-ins.

I'm not trying to be alarmist, just pragmatic. People do strange things when they get in the holiday spirit. (Yes, the pun was intended.) So keep an extra eye on your property if you can. A few extra heads and fingers can be useful too! Heh, heh.

If you do suffer a bit of misfortune in all the frightful frenzy, I hope you live in an area like Chattanooga, Tenn., where crime is not taken lightly. In the past week, I've seen two news releases regarding the community's "Crime Stoppers" program, which is currently making efforts to assist a local storage facility.

On Oct. 1, several units were burlgarized at Mini Max Budget Self Storage. The culprit as well as the make and color of his vehicle were caught on surveillance tape. Now the local news outlets are announcing the information, hoping to get residents involved in the search. It's like neighborhood Crime Watch but on a larger, more organized scale. They're even offering a cash reward. I really applaud the city for its support of small business and its fight on crime. For an industry like self-storage, this kind of grassroots is key.

Can I hear from some storage operators who are making special crime-prevention effortsin general and for next week's holiday? What types of things are you doing to keep the hooligans at bay?

NJ Storage Operators Feel the (Tax) Pain

Article-NJ Storage Operators Feel the (Tax) Pain

Self-storage operators in New Jersey, who had to start charging a 7 percent sales tax on storage rentals on Oct. 1, are feeling the pain of lost business and disatisfied customers. A recent article on PressOfAtlanticCity.com included an interview with Charles Sapienzo, owner of CNS Self Storage in Galloway Township, N.J., who said he lost 10 percent of his customers as a result of the new levy. He also had to get a second job to pay his property taxes. Customers are telling him they can't afford their self-storage rent with the new tax. Others want to leave the state altogether.

Other businesses are also feeling the burn, including health clubs, private investigators, tattoo parlors and massage therapists. The tax change is part of a new state budget passed in July.

For more information on how the tax is affecting storage operators, visit the website of the New Jersey Self Storage Association at www.njssa.org.

PRODUCT: TIGER TACO

Article-PRODUCT: TIGER TACO

Sometimes an invention is so simple yet practical, people wonder why they didnt think of it first. Such a product is the Tiger Taco, an uncomplicated tool that quickly and easily secures carton flaps flush with the box side and away from the packing space. The device is a round piece of metal folded along its diameter to form a taco shape. It prevents the inconveniences associated with placing and removing items into a box. Like a third-hand, it allows someone quick access into the box space, reduces snags and cuts from the flap edges, and gives a true picture of the volume and contents of a box.

This is the single, most innovative packaging tool since the invention of the cardboard box, says co-owner and developer George Pauli.

For a remarkably simple application, there is an extensive amount of product development behind the Tiger Taco patent. The initial utility tool was an inelegant, elongated folded piece of scrap metal used for years by Pauli in his embroidery operation, where textiles are continually removed and replaced into boxes. In a moment of inspiration, Pauli and co-owner Chris Miller realized how the value of bringing it to a market where 25 billion boxes are used annually. From there, it was a matter of designing a memorable brand and refining the tool to provide the greatest utility in a high-volume production environment, Pauli says.

Where did the tiger name come from? I have a fondness for tigers, Pauli says. And theyre strong. Just like the tool.

Cool!

The Tiger Taco gives operators a new product to sell to customers, Miller says. The tacos point-of-purchase display combines hands-on experience with a wow, thats cool factor. Its great when a consumer has that eureka moment and gets how the Tiger works, he says. New storage customers as well as those coming in to pay a bill or purchase moving supplies will be drawn to the taco.

Owners can help market their facility by placing their logo on the taco for a minimal unit-order cost. The products irresistible POP drives impulse sales and adds appeal to even small retail areas. The Tiger Taco is now available on a limited basis through the companys website for operators who are willing to directly work with the inventors in a consumer-testing environment.

Our initial stage of distribution is designed to provide the self-storage market with the first taste of the tool in a closed market with a focused retail-consumer base, Pauli says. This gives us the ability to measure, refine and respond to their comments.

Depending on response to the initial distribution, unlimited fulfillment could be available before years end. POP kits of 24 are priced at $69.96. Recommended retail is $4.95 per unit. Tiger Taco Industries is an LLC owned by Pauli and Miller.

Its sole focus is on the development of the tool, with logical brand extensions. The product doesnt require an extensive management structure, so customer concerns are directly handled by someone who cares about your business, Miller says.

The Tiger Taco is manufactured in the United States using American-made materials and labor. We will continue this practice no matter what we do internationally, Pauli says. There are several logical brand extensions being developed for the Tiger Taco in the United States and in joint venture with our international partner.
