The Cerritos, Calif., Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend the City Council approve a remodeling application submitted on behalf of self-storage real estate investment trust (REIT) Extra Space Storage Inc. The proposal was submitted by Valli Architectural Group, which the REIT has hired to remodel the exterior of the two-story facility at 10753 Artesia Blvd., according to the source.
The remodel is intended to update the north and northwest elevations to look more modern and replace aging materials, the source reported. The original site was developed in 1977, and Building One was finished with light-beige stucco, wood trim and panels, and a blue tile roof. Updates include an industrial-style terra-cotta material, corrugated metal panels, bright blue panels, green tinted glazing, wrought-iron fencing and decorative wall lighting. New landscaping is also part of the project.
Extra Space doesn’t want to include art in the remodel and agreed to make a contribution to the Art in Public Places Trust, according to the source.
Arial Valli, owner of Valli Architectural Group, told officials the new building materials will last up to 40 years. “This space really needs a facelift, and we are happy to do this,” Valli said. “We would like to get started as soon as possible to bring you the best remodel possible.”
Headquartered in Salt Lake City, Extra Space owns or operates 1,081 self-storage properties in 35 states; Washington, D.C.; and Puerto Rico. The company’s properties comprise approximately 720,000 units and 80 million square feet of rentable space.
