A self-storage owner is furious after discovering he’ll have to foot the bill to remove medical waste from five defaulted units at his two facilities in Irving, Texas. Ron Hines, owner of Dependable Mini-Storage and Sixth Street Mini-Storage, cut the locks on the spaces in January after the tenant stopped paying rent last fall. The customer rented four units at Dependable and one at Sixth Street. All were filled with hundreds of syringes, red bags labeled “hazard” and blood-spattered boxes, according to sources.

“I was mad. I was actually furious,” said Hines, who notified the city and district attorneys’ offices, the mayor’s office, and the Environmental Protection Agency. “Nobody will do anything criminal to these guys. They let them do this to people, and then they make us the villains and we’re responsible for cleaning it up.”

The boxes are labeled “MedClean Management Solutions,” which specializes in hazardous-waste disposal, according to a Web search. However, the phone numbers listed led to seemingly unrelated businesses, a source reported.

The cleanup could cost Hines an estimated $56,000. “Now I have to spend the money to get rid of this stuff,” he said.
