National self-storage provider U-Haul has established a new sustainability initiative with its U-Haul Reuse Centers, a program developed to provide a redistribution network for unwanted goods, including gently used household items, furniture, sporting equipment, bikes and clothing. U-Haul facilities will now include a reuse area where customers and employees can drop off items for donation. Clothing-donation bins for the Salvation Army and Goodwill will also be placed near the area for customers who wish to donate directly to those groups.
"Reusing gives a second life to tons of household items, reduces carbon emission by reducing trips to landfills, and eliminates tons of solid waste deposited in landfills, while providing customers eco-friendly alternatives to purchasing these as new products," said Bill Woods, president, U-Haul Co. of Southern Oregon.
With nearly 1,100 self-storage facilities in North America, U-Haul has made a commitment to reduce, reuse and recycle. The company’s initiatives include fuel-efficient moving vans, neighborhood proximity, moving-box reuse, moving pads made from discarded material and packing peanuts that are 100 percent biodegradable.
