Next Door Self Storage, which operates 14 facilities in Illinois, received approval this week to demolish an existing office building at its property in Algonquin, Ill., and build a new, three-story self-storage structure. Board members for the Village of Algonquin approved construction plans for the new building at 1910 E. Algonquin Road. It will encompass 30,000 square feet of storage space as well as an office.
The facility’s exterior will feature a stone base and brick over the majority of the structure, according to the source. The parking lot and driveway will also be renovated. Adjustments are still being made to the plans to include landscaping to screen the property’s outdoor-vehicle storage, according to Katie Parkhurst, an Algonquin senior planner. However, vehicle storage will be phased out over the next couple of years, and indoor-vehicle parking isn’t being considered, Parkhurst said.
The property also has space at the rear on which a second, 22,000-square-foot building might be built in the future. If constructed, it would have the same architectural features as the current buildings, the source reported.
Next Door Self Storage is working with current tenants to relocate them to new units before demolition begins, the source reported. The building that will be demolished has four or five tenants, Parkhurst told the source. A construction timeline has yet to be established.
Based in Crest Hill, Ill., Next Door Self Storage is owned by the Murphy family.
