The national Self Storage Association (SSA) announced that its chief operating officer (COO), Timothy J. Dietz, will succeed Michael T. Scanlon Jr. as president and CEO effective Oct. 1. In a related move, the SSA also hired Marcus C. Dunn as director of government relations to fill the position Dietz has held for the last 11 years.
Dietz joined the SSA in 2004, leading its lobbying efforts and managing executive functions until his promotion to COO last year. The association’s board of directors unanimously confirmed Dietz to replace Scanlon, who is retiring, according to an SSA e-mail newsletter.
"Mike Scanlon has assembled an excellent team of association professionals who share his vision of industry representation and membership services," Dietz told the source. "For more than a decade, he has steadily improved the member value proposition of the SSA, establishing a stature consistent with the leading national real estate trade associations. Our staff looks forward to building upon the considerable momentum that Mike's hard work and example have provided."
Dunn comes to the SSA with a varied background in advocacy work, most recently with the Security Industry Association (SIA), a member-based organization that represents the global security industry. The SIA advocates for policies and legislation in several vertical markets, including education, healthcare, ports and transit.
Dunn previously held positions in the U.S. Congress, including legislative support for former Colorado Rep. Bob Schaffer, and lobbied with the law firm Patton Boggs, now called Squire Patton Boggs.
The SSA represents more than 22,000 U.S. self-storage facilities and approximately 9,100 international facilities, according to its website. It’s affiliated with several state and international self-storage associations and currently has 5,500 members.
