Phoenix-based U-Haul International Inc., which operates more than 1,300 self-storage locations across North America, is converting a former Sportsman's Warehouse in Fargo, N.D., to self-storage facility under the name U-Haul Moving & Storage of West Acres. The property at 4901 13th Ave. S. opened with a temporary showroom on Feb. 20 that currently offers moving and packing supplies, trailer and truck rentals, towing equipment, and U-Box portable-storage containers, according to the source.
The deteriorating building had been vacant for more than five years prior to U-Haul’s acquisition, the source reported. Renovations are underway on the 4.8-acre site to add 800 indoor, climate-controlled units. Hitch installation and propane sales will also be available.
The company expects to hire 15 or more employees once the facility is fully operational, said Shawn Odden, president of the U-Haul Co. of Fargo. “U-Haul is excited to renovate this property and bring a facelift to the area,” he added. "We have been underserving West Fargo. Now that we have a centrally located facility, we can reduce the length of travel for our customers.”
Established in 1945, U-Haul owns more than 44 million square feet of storage space. The company’s corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, has led to dozens of conversion projects in recent years.
