Chicagoland self-storage operator LifeStorage will open a new facility, converted from office space, in the River North neighborhood of Chicago on May 15. Cobalt Commercial Construction handled the refurbishment of the seven-story loft building at 333 Ohio St., which has already begun accepting storage reservations online and by phone.

What LifeStorage wanted, and what we've accomplished, is taking an existing property and turning it into something so much better," said Steve Osborne, construction manager. "It's a gorgeous building, and in my experience, when I see storage facilities, this completely breaks the mold. There's a coffee bar that serves Starbucks, a fireplace ... it's more akin to a four-star hotel."

Features of the new facility include 24-hour security monitoring, daily access, all climate-controlled units, covered loading and unloading, covered parking spaces and electronic-gate access.

Iwona Lach, marketing coordinator for LifeStorage, sees the visibility of the new location, which is very near the downtown area, as a opportunity to gain a wider audience of customers.

The opening raises LifeStorage's facility total in Chicago and its suburbs to 18, with another facility slated to open later this year. LifeStorage was founded in 2002 by owners Jean Jodoin and Christopher Barry.
