Legislators Discuss Repeal of Arkansas Storage Tax

Article-Legislators Discuss Repeal of Arkansas Storage Tax

Last week, Arkansas legislators discussed proposals for removing the state sales tax from groceries and a handful of other goods and services, including self-storage.

With both the Democratic and Republican candidates for governor on board, legislators feel the time is right for eliminating the sales tax on groceries in Arkansas, reported the Arkansas News Bureau on Friday. Last week, Members of the House and Senate Interim Committee on Revenue and Taxation discussed a variety of proposals on how to remove the state sales tax from food and several other taxed items, though no votes were taken on proposals that will likely become legislation for the 2007 regular session.

Sen. Bobby Glover, D-Carlisle, discussed repealing the gross receipts tax on mini warehouse and self-storage services, which he said would take about $2 million annually from state coffers.

Other tax issues addressed were state capital gains tax, a back-to-school tax-free holiday, and income taxes for Arkansas National Guard and other military.
