Westy Self Storage, which operates 15 properties in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, will be a sponsor for the Northport Nautical Mile, a June 20 running event organized by the Northport, N.Y., Running Club. Funds raised from the event will benefit the Northport American Legion Post 694 and Northport Volunteer Fire Department.
The race celebrates and promotes Northport’s nautical nature, village charm and community spirit, according to the club’s website. Used by sailors, a nautical mile is one minute of arch measured along any meridian. For runners, it’s 1.15 road miles. The race route begins at Laurel Avenue School, goes north to Main Street, and then turns downhill through the village. It ends at the harbor park, where there’ll be an unofficial clock at the one-mile mark.
Nautical-themed trophies will be given to the top finishers in each age group as well as the top three overall finishers for men, women and “masters” (age 40 and over). An awards ceremony will be held at the town gazebo in conjunction with a farmer’s market and the annual “Blessing of the Fleet” event, which marks the official opening of boating season.
Founded in 1977, the Northport Running Club promotes and encourages running at all levels of ability. Membership is available to individuals or families.
Founded in 1990 by The Arredondo Family, Westy Self Storage is headquartered in Stamford, Conn. It operates four facilities in Connecticut, four in New Jersey and seven in New York.
