Northland Self-Storage in Petoskey, Mich., recently acquired an adjacent building, which it plans to convert to self-storage. A portion of the former Hammond Equipment building on Charlevoix Avenue will be converted into 20 to30 storage units, some of which will be climate-controlled.

The existing building contains offices and a conference room that Northland plans to rent. David Shuman, an associate broker for Real Estate One, is assisting the storage company in securing renters for the office space.

“Over the past two years, we have carefully tracked the needs of our prospective and existing clients,” Frank Thomas, general manager, told the source. “Repeatedly, we were asked to provide a climate-controlled environment.”

Thomas said customers who are looking to store antiques, paintings, pharmaceutical samples, medical and surgical equipment, and medical records seek units that control temperature and humidity. “In addition, as the economy has improved, we have seen a need for larger and more diverse storage spaces,” he added.

Locally owned and operated for more than 25 years, Northland Self-Storage has another location in Harbor Springs.
