A city redevelopment committee in Grand Island, Neb., is still considering whether to sell a vacant plot of land to a self-storage developer.

The Community Redevelopment Authority (CRA) is discussing selling the single-family housing lot at 408 W. Second St. to Anastacio Jacobo for $5,000. Jacobo has proposed to build an 11-unit self-storage facility.

The land has been vacant since 2005 when a house burned down. The CRA purchased the land for $5,000 and spent another $7,500 to clear away the debris from the burned house and annual upkeep.

The 66-foot-wide lot fronts Highway 30 and is surrounded by single-family homes. However, its currently zoned for heavy-business use. Jacobo was the only bidder in the call for proposals advertised last summer.

CRA members voted unanimously Wednesday to defer any action on selling the property until other developers could be contacted to gauge interest in building housing on the plot.
