Officials in Menomonie, Wis., are considering an ordinance amendment that would place limits on the location, size and number of units allowed at self-storage facilities. The measure would cap the number of units at indoor, climate-controlled facilities to 350 per building and restrict their size to 200 square feet or less. Facilities with drive-up unit access would cap units at 200, with size limited to 400 square feet, according to the source.
The city council discussed the amendment at its meeting on Nov. 4, though at least two council members expressed concerns about its scope. Lee Schwebs criticized the amendment as being out of step with community needs, while Mary Solberg acknowledged it could create issues for current business owners. “I think on that matter alone, we’re boxing them in,” she said during the meeting.
Brian Kiefer, who owns Secure Storage at 3287 Wilson St., told the council the amendment would create an unfair advantage for larger brands and developers that specialize in converting vacant retail spaces to self-storage.
The amendment was recommended to the council by the planning commission. The council will conduct a public hearing on the measure on Nov. 18.
