In a recent issue of SalesForce XP magazine, there was an article about manager habits—those you should develop and the ones you should kick. Among the four habits you should develop was “lead like an umpire.” It stated, “The best leaders are those who can make a quick decision under pressure.” We all know that rings true. When you’re juggling a tenant irate over a late fee, a ringing phone and you still have five units to inspect after move-outs, leading under pressure is a must.
Among the naughty habits was, not surprisingly, poor communication skills. Another bad habit to break: Quit being a crutch. The article stated, “Great leaders create the kind of loyalty and respect that inspires people to ‘take the hill,’ even under the most difficult circumstances.” In other words, the well-trained, well-respected employee can easily handle the late tenant, ringing phone and still find time to sweep out the empty units.
In the December print edition of ISS, we explore staffing, training and management. Look for articles about finding the right manager for your self-storage facility, four steps to increase employee performance—and how to evaluate it. Plus, my co-editor, Drew Whitney, wrote a fantastic article about the Self-Storage Training Institute’s new Qualified Manager Program, an online management training program specifically for self-storage managers.
