Update 8/26/16 – Storage Giant received approval from the Bristol City Council on Aug. 23 to build its proposed project. The unanimous vote for the two planning applications covered the development as well as the facility signage.
8/22/16 – Wales-based self-storage operator Storage Giant Ltd. is seeking approval from the Bristol City Council to build a mixed-use development in Brislington, England, that will include office and retail space as well as self-storage. The proposal for the 1.9-acre site at 819-821 Bath Road will be presented to the council at an Aug. 23 development-control committee.
The operator had received initial approval for the project in 2009, which was extended in 2013, according to the source. A report submitted to the council recommends the members approve the plans subject to conditions, which weren’t outlined by the source. However, the city received about 200 objections from those concerned about an increase in highway congestion and the impact the project will have on city services.
Britannia Lanes currently operates from the site, offering moving services and self-storage units. The property was formally home to a metal-works factory and maintenance depot built in the 1930s. The structures were partially demolished 10 years ago. Storage Giant plans to tear down the remaining buildings and construct a 20,000-square-foot storage facility. The development will also include 13 office suites, a combined 4,300 square feet of meeting and conference space, and six spaces for retail or fast-food restaurants. Potential tenants include bakery chain Greggs, Papa John’s Pizza and Starbucks, the source reported.
Designed by Oxford Architects, the complex will have up to 80 parking spaces. It’s expected to create up to 87 full-time and 102 part-time jobs.
Storage Giant also operates five facilities in South Wales. It recently acquired the two-facility The Space Place Self Storage portfolio in England.
