Irish Self-Storage Operator Nesta Reports Increase in Rentals Due to COVID-19

Nesta Storage, which operates four self-storage facilities in Dublin, has experienced a record increase in rentals, which it attributes to circumstances created by the coronavirus pandemic. As office workers were forced to conduct business remotely this spring and summer, the Irish operator has received a “substantial increase” in rental requests, according to a press release.

“We were surprised by an all-time increase in inquiries,” said Brian Hefferon, CEO. “In June, we had a 67 percent increase in inquiries compared to last year.”

Nesta attributes the move-in bump to customers who need to declutter and create workspace in their homes as well as businesses downsizing or reconfiguring their physical space to comply with government requirements. Temporary repatriation of foreign workers who have taken advantage of telecommuting from their own countries could also be a factor, the release stated.

In some cases, working from home could become more frequent or permanent, which could lead to ongoing storage demand, Nesta officials said. “Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon and other big tech companies extended their remote-working policy at least until early 2021, which is allowing people to take more long-term decisions to improve their workspace at home,” Hefferon said. “However, we’ve noticed people upgrading their offices or returning to their home countries since May.”

Nesta is an indigenous, family-operated business founded in 1989. It’s a part of the Kefron Group, a document- and information-management business that operates from seven locations in the United Kingdom. Nesta has two additional self-storage sites in Dublin under development, according to its website.
