New York-based artist Adrianne Lobel, best known as a set designer for dance, opera and theater productions, is currently on exhibit at the Bowery Gallery in New York City with a 12-painting series called “Storage/Spaces,” which prominently depicts self-storage scenes using the Great Value Storage facility in Hyde Park, N.Y., as her subject. The exhibit runs through Oct. 31.
The paintings combine “her exacting sense of proportion and architectural detail, her delight in texture and color, and her appreciation of the beauty of everyday blandness,” states a description of the exhibit on the gallery website. In addition to self-storage buildings, the artwork includes a bowling alley, garages and malls painted in Upstate New York, near Lobel’s home in Rhinebeck, N.Y.
“I find these places to be imbued with a poetry, which comes from being not considered poetic or beautiful,” Lobel said in a press release. “They are as precious as anything commonly recognized as beautiful or meaningful.”
Lobel began painting in her teens before concentrating on her career in set design. She committed to painting more about a dozen years ago and is a recent graduate of the New York Studio School, an art school focusing on drawing, painting and sculpture, according to her website.
Great Value Storage is a privately owned self-storage company that operates 61 self-storage facilities in Illinois, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Tennessee and Texas. Its portfolio comprises about 4 million square feet in more than 29,400 units.
