Author Jay Bonansinga, best known for penning the official “The Walking Dead” novel series, has written a psychological-horror book titled “Self Storage.” The story centers on John Fitzgerald, an artist and heroin addict who gets locked inside his storage unit two days before Christmas with his 6-year-old son Jake.

With no way out from inside the unit and the self-storage facility empty for the holiday, the father and son have a harrowing experience as they contend with darkness, isolation, hunger and thirst. The situation intensifies as John goes through heroin withdrawal, unable to tell if what he’s experiencing are hallucinations or reality, according to a review.

The tale is “a surreal nightmare that is part ‘The Shining,’ part ‘Naked Lunch,’ part ‘Lost Weekend,’ and part photo album of my own life,” Bonansinga describes on his website. “The fact that this book is the most personal book I’ve ever written is kind of scary—even to me—as well as the fact that the story takes you to places I thought I would never take a reader.”

The book is available through Amazon and publisher Magnetik Ink, a creative endeavor launched by Bonansinga and business partner Jeff Siegel. A promotional video about the book is viewable online.
