Clarkston, GA, Puts 6-Month Pause on Self-Storage Development

Article-Clarkston, GA, Puts 6-Month Pause on Self-Storage Development

The Clarkston, GA., City Council voted on March 3 to put a six-month moratorium on new self-storage development. The pause will allow city officials time to rewrite zoning code to address where self-storage could be developed, according to councilwoman Y.T. Bell. The ban also applies to new gas stations and dollar stores. The freeze expires on Sept. 21.

Council members are concerned the city has an “overabundance” of these business types and building more could have a negative impact, according to the source. Spanning less than 2 square miles, Clarkston is currently home to three self-storage facilities, seven gas stations and three dollar stores.

Several cities have enacted moratoriums in recent months. Information about these bans and how some developers and owners are challenging them can be viewed in this Inside Self-Storage News Desk video.
