An officer shot and wounded a suspect at a Jessup, Maryland, self-storage facility on Monday after said suspect rammed his vehicle into a police car. Police had been searching for thieves of a local Lowe’s home-improvement store when they followed four suspects to the Life Storage facility at 8255 Washington Blvd., around 3 p.m., according to sources.
When officers approached the vehicle driven by Donte Bernard Shaw, 31, he attempted to flee. This is when he crashed and was shot. Upon searching the suspect’s vehicle, police discovered the stolen merchandise and three loaded handguns.
Shaw was taken to a hospital for treatment but was released the same day. He’s been charged with two counts each of first-degree assault and second-degree assault against a law-enforcement officer. He also faces charges of destruction of property, theft and weapon violations. He’s being held without bond.
Percy Brown, 26, and Taquan Neal, 32, who were with Shaw at the self-storage facility, were charged with theft and weapons violations. A fourth man, George Shaw, 48, was charged with theft. All had warrants from other jurisdictions, the sources reported.
The officer who shot Shaw was placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation. He and another office suffered minor injuries in the incident.
Based in Buffalo, N.Y., Life Storage operates more than 950 self-storage facilities in 33. Its portfolio of owned and managed facilities comprises more than 71.4 million square feet.
