Ten law-enforcement canine units from the south suburbs of Chicago and northwest Indiana came to Crete Self Storage in Crete, Ill., in February for routine narcotics-detection training conducted by the Will County Sheriff's Department.
Simulated drugs were placed in several units, and each canine officer and dog were given the task to locate them. The dogs sniffed at the unit doors one by one and then sat or crouched frozen in front of the source of the drug odor. Often the training officer would mess with the dogs to distract them, but the dogs remained motionless, signaling they had smelled the odor of drugs.
Participating law-enforcement agencies were the Illinois State Police; Will County and Grundy County sheriff's departments; Illinois police departments from Tinley Park, Oak Forest, Olympia Fields, Park Forest and Crete; and Indiana police departments from Dyer and Schererville.
Crete Self Storage is a standalone facility that offers traditional storage along with RV and mobile-home storage. It's located at 25608 S. Dixie Highway, about 40 miles south of Chicago.
