Northwest Sporting Goods & Supply LLC received permission from the Winsted, Conn., Planning and Zoning Commission on Monday to build an unmanned self-storage facility on a vacant lot. The property at 180 Rowley St. is adjacent to its Northwest Sporting Goods store at 178 Rowley St.

The plans include the construction of a new storage building and parking lot. In addition, 2,000 square feet of retail space at the company’s existing retail space will be converted to 64 storage units, according to the source. The storage operation will be managed remotely from the sporting-goods store.

Northwest needed a special permit because the land is in a gateway zone, one of eight zoning classifications the town approved in November. The zoning request was also the first reviewed by the newly established Architectural Review Committee. The members recommended the developer stagger the planting of evergreen and deciduous trees bordering Rowley Street “to create visual interest,” the source reported.

Northwest purchased the vacant lot in 2010 for $375,000, property records state. It was last appraised at $88,400 and assessed at a value of $61,880.
