Town Real Estate Enterprises LLC, a division of real estate development firm Kossman Development Co. (KDC), has submitted a zoning application to convert the former J&C Hobbies and Dollar General stores in Penn Hills, Pa., to a Defender Self Storage facility. The properties are in the Penn Hills Municipal Shopping Center at 12224 Frankstown Road. The zoning board is scheduled to vote on the permit at its Oct. 25 meeting, according to the source.

The plans involve building 26,300 square feet of climate-controlled space. The facility will also include an office that sells moving and packing supplies, Penn Hills Planner Damian Buccilli told the source.

“We believe it's a benefit to the community,” said Curtis Kossman, president of KDC. “And we believe we have support of the community and administration. It's a great use of the location.”

Chuck and Betty Pusateri, owners of J&C Hobbies, opened the business in 1997 and operated it until its closure in April.

Based in Pittsburgh and founded by Paul Kossman in the late 1950s, KDC designs, develops, owns and manages apartments, hotels, offices, retail space and warehouses in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas. Its portfolio includes more than 4.5 million square feet of developed property. The company also owns several parcels of land earmarked for future development.
