Universal Storage Solutions (USS), which operates nine self-storage facilities in North and South Carolina, recently converted the former Harris Teeter grocery store in Winston-Salem, N.C., to a 71,000-square-foot self-storage facility. Opened in January, the property at 401 Jonestown Road features 550 climate-controlled units and three enclosed, dock-high exterior units. It also includes a business center with a FedEx ShipCenter, conference room, free Wi-Fi and coffee bar.
During the conversion, a mezzanine was added to the interior of the existing 53,000-square-foot building to create a second level. The project is a good example of recycling an existing structure into a more useful and better-suited purpose, USS partners Ron Crowell, David Dixon, Gary Pharo and AJ Ross told the source.
The facility will be managed by Universal Storage Group, a Smyrna, Ga.-based property-management firm for which Dixon is the vice president of development. In addition to management services, the company provides manager and owner training, start-up services, facility design, feasibility studies, general-contractor services and brand development for self-storage facilities.
