Phoenix-based U-Haul International Inc., which operates more than 1,300 self-storage locations across North America, acquired Sun City Self Storage in El Paso, Texas. The 7.28-acre property at 10485 Dyer St., which has been rebranded as U-Haul Storage of Sun Valley, was built in 2008. It comprises 87,581 square feet of storage space in 500 drive-up units. U-Haul has installed a new, automated gate system and plans to add vehicle-parking spaces, according to a press release.
"Sun City Self Storage was already a U-Haul neighborhood dealer, so this process [of assuming ownership] has been really easy," said Juan Candia, president of the U-Haul Co. of Southern New Mexico. "We are excited to reuse this existing facility and meet the self-storage needs of the El Paso community."
U-Haul now owns and operates five self-storage facilities in El Paso, comprising 251,465 square feet of storage space in 2,529 units. There are also 28 neighborhood dealers offering U-Haul products and services in the city.
The acquisition of the El Paso property was driven by U-Haul’s corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, the release stated. U-Haul’s adaptive reuse of existing structures eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities diminish their unwanted inventory of unused buildings, U-Haul officials said.
Established in 1945, U-Haul has more than 44 million square feet of storage space at its owned facilities throughout North America.
