Phoenix-based U-Haul International Inc. has purchased and is renovating the former Germantown Mini Storage in Germantown, Md. The property at 19525 Waters Road has been rebranded as U-Haul Moving & Storage of Germantown. It’s the company's only store in the city and one of more than 30 U-Haul-owned and -operated facilities in Maryland, according to a company press release.
The 2.14-acre property features four outdoor storage buildings, a two-story house and a large lot. It currently offers truck and van rentals, vehicle storage, and moving and packing supplies. Construction is underway to add a hitch bay. Future plans include the construction of a multi-story, indoor storage facility and possibly U-Box portable-storage units.
"We are really looking forward to the modernization of this facility and the potential for growth that this location has. Once this location is fully renovated, it will be a huge benefit to the community,” said Patrick Potter, general manager.
The acquisition of the Germantown facility was driven by U-Haul’s corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, the release stated. U-Haul’s adaptive reuse of existing structures eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities diminish their unwanted inventory of unused buildings, U-Haul officials said.
Established in 1945, U-Haul has more than 44 million square feet of storage space at more than 1,200 owned facilities throughout North America.
