Phoenix-based U-Haul International Inc., which operates more than 1,200 self-storage locations across North America, has acquired two Central Storage facilities in Metairie, La. The properties at 3847 Airline Drive and 1019 Central Ave. have been rebranded as U-Haul Storage of Metairie at Airline Hwy. and U-Haul Moving & Storage of Metairie at Central Ave. With a combined 814 units, they serve the communities of Harahan, Jefferson, Metairie and New Orleans, La.

The Airline Highway facility will be operated remotely by the other property and offer 24-hour access. U-Haul is hiring staff for the Central Avenue facility and plans to employ at least 12 people between the two properties. In addition to self-storage, the facilities offer moving and packing supplies, and truck and cargo-van rentals.

"[The Airline Highway] location was already a self-storage facility and a U-Haul neighborhood dealer, so it's a perfect fit," said Pat Allen, president of the U-Haul Co. of Southern Louisiana. "We have been able to offer management and direction so that we can successfully serve our customers."

The acquisition of both properties was driven by U-Haul’s corporate sustainability initiatives, which support infill development to help local communities lower their carbon footprint, according to a company press release. U-Haul’s adaptive reuse of existing structures eliminates the amount of energy and resources required for new-construction materials and helps local cities diminish their unwanted inventory of unused buildings, U-Haul officials said.

Established in 1945, U-Haul has more than 44 million square feet of storage space at more than 1,200 owned facilities throughout North America.
