Signal Mountain Self Storage in Chattanooga, Tenn., is expanding its storage capacity by demolishing a former school building on its property and adding a new structure. The project is expected to be complete in September, according to a press release.
Once renovated, the facility at 3507 W. Road will comprise 19,580 square feet of space in 600 units. Local company TG Edwards Construction Co. is the general contractor.
Mountain Creek Grammar School occupied one of the original foundations on the property, which is at the base of Signal Mountain. Erected in 1910, the school was converted to self-storage in the late 1980s. Its history will live on in the expanded storage facility, as the operator plans to use bricks from the original building to form three walls in the front office. A concrete corner stone as well as some metal and copper will also be recycled. The corner stone reveals pieces of history surrounding the former elementary school, including the builder, architect and first school-board members.
Signal Mountain Self Storage serves the communities of Chattanooga, East Brainer, Red Bank and Signal Mountain, Tenn. Property features include drive-up and temperature-controlled units as well as vehicle parking. The site is managed by Absolute Storage Management, a self-storage owner and property-management firm based in Memphis, Tenn.
