Space Mart Self Storage in Blackwood, N.J., will host a child car seat safety check on April 21. The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is being organized by the Gloucester Township Police Department and Safe Kids Southern New Jersey.
The child car seat inspections will allow drivers to have new car seats installed by certified safety seat technicians. Technicians will also inspect previously installed car seats to ensure they were installed correctly.
Data released by Safe Kids shows child safety seats and safety belts, when properly installed and used, can prevent injuries and save lives. Each year, an estimated 975 children younger than 14 die in car accidents in the United States. Children restrained in child safety seats have an 80 percent lower risk of fatal injury than those who are unrestrained. In a study observing the misuse of 3,442 child restraint systems in six states, approximately 73 percent of systems showed at least one critical misuse.
Safe Kids Southern New Jersey is part of Safe Kids USA, a nationwide network of organizations working to prevent unintentional injuries for children ages 1 to 14.
Space Mart Self Storage has eight facilities across Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia.
