A resident manager at a self-storage facility in Ocean City, Md., does more for his community than just offer storage solutions. Carl Godbee posts baseball and football game scores on the marquee outside West Ocean Self Storage as a service to the community. Its a tradition hes carried out for the facility since his employment began 18 years ago.
Rain or shine, Godbee makes it his business to post scores for every Orioles and Ravens game on the facility marquee. The tradition started with the previous manager, who posted Orioles scores during his employment at the facility. Godbee added the Baltimore Ravens scores after the franchise was founded in 1996.
According to Godbee, people occasionally call the facility and thank him for the scores. He says some passersby have even stopped in to rent space after seeing the marquee.
Facility owner Bruce O'Heir says the facility originally began posting the scores as a marketing idea. Now he says, "It's more like a public service to the community."
Godbee has tried convincing his boss to get an electronic sign for the facility, but with no luck. Instead, he uses a long pole to post the individual numbers and letters.
West Ocean Self Storage, located just off Route 50, has 500 self-storage units and offers U-Haul truck rentals. The facility opened in 1989.
