Bellam Self Storage & Boxes in San Rafael, Calif., has partnered with the San Rafael Pacifics minor-league baseball team to promote a “No Litter in Baseball” campaign designed to curb litter at Albert Park, where the team plays. As part of the program, fans are asked to sign a pledge to refrain from discarding garbage other than in designated composting, recycling and trash bins and, in return, receive a blue, “No Litter in Baseball” wristband, according to the source.

Bellam owner Andree Jansheski told the source she came up with the idea while watching a San Francisco Giants game on television and noticed a large amount of trash in the stands. “It’s too bad; people should realize there’s a responsibility factor,” she said. “This should carry over to our everyday life—that we shouldn’t litter on the streets. We should keep the universe clean.”

Bedlam worked with Jennifer Clark, director of community and business relations with the Pacifics, to develop the program. So far this season, more than 950 people have signed cards pledging not to litter, and the baseball team has reduced its trash bill by diverting waste into the proper bins, Clark told the source.

Additional partners in the program are Marin Clean Energy, a provider of electricity through clean and renewable sources, and Marin Sanitary Service, which has provided trash- and recycling collection services in Marin County, Calif., since 1948.

Bellam and Jansheski have been longtime supporters of environmental conservation. In 2012, Jansheski was recognized as a “Hero of Marin” for environmental stewardship by local newspaper “Pacific Sun,” while the self-storage facility became a Bay Area Certified Green Business in 2006 through the Marin County green-business program.

Among Bellam’s eco-friendly initiatives are energy-efficient lighting, solar panels, environmentally friendly paint and insulation materials, low-flow toilets, sensor faucets, and a strict policy against the storing of hazardous materials, according to the facility website. The company is also dedicated to keeping the city free from litter, particularly cigarette butts.
