A Stow-It Self Storage facility in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada, co-hosted a fundraiser and “Shave Off” event on June 6 with Heroes for Hope, an organization that engages police officers and other emergency-service personnel and their communities in the fight against cancer. The affair was also held in partnership with the Bluewater Community Office for the Canadian Cancer Society, a national, community-based organization of volunteers that helps fund research and provides education on the prevention and treatment of cancer.
The fundraiser included a silent auction and live auction for the contents of three self-storage units. Bill Walker, a member of the Provincial Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, was the special-guest auctioneer. The Shave Off, in which participants requested donations in exchange for shaving their heads in honor and support of cancer patients, followed the auctions. Ponytail donations, which are used to make wigs for cancer patients, were also accepted.
Proceeds from the event benefited the Canadian Cancer Society's local programs, which support families with children battling cancer.
Formerly called Cops for Cancer, Heroes for Hope was founded in 1994 and has raised more than $50 million for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Stow-It Self Storage also operates a facility in Port Elgin, Ontario, Canada.
