Storage Post Self Storage donated dozens of empty packing boxes to the United Way of Rockland County, N.Y., to assist with the nonprofits September food drive. The United Way is working with other hunger-relief organizations that have banded together to create the Rockland Hunger Action Coalition, which assists those in need and increases public awareness of hunger-related issues.
The coalition declared September "Hunger Action Month. In addition to collecting food, it has hosted programs and events throughout the month including the Hunger Summit 3 on Sept. 18. The event included workshops on advocacy initiatives and action steps.
About one in 10 Rockland County residents are considered in danger of not having an adequate food supply, according to the source. The countys high cost of living, including taxes, utilities, housing and medical costs, all contribute to the problem. The coalition works to raise awareness of food-insecure families and individuals, and helps improve and feed the community. Hunger affects adults in assisted living, families and seniors with fixed incomes, according to coalition officials.
"When United Way approached us and informed us of the cause and Hunger Action Month, we wanted to help immediately," said Mohammad Sadqeen, district manager for Storage Post. "They needed storage boxes to hold donated food, and we were able to quickly provide them from our full-service merchandise centers."
Storage Post regularly commits to community involvement and charitable efforts, including hosting food and coat drives at each of its locations, donating to local organizations and participating in events and festivals.
