Beth Krause, owner of Best Self Storage in Howell, Mich., has reserved a unit at the facility to serve as the Livingston County, Mich., outlet for Foster Closet of Michigan, a nonprofit organization that provides free clothing and personal items to foster families in need. Krause and business partner Laurie Shaw opened the shop last week. "Sometimes needs are not always able to be met by the state of Michigan and that is where Foster Closet steps in," Krause told the source.
Krause got the idea to start the local branch after she participated in a local sock and underwear drive, and saw firsthand how much need there was for items. "We did this drive for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and it truly opened our eyes to how many basic things some families need, especially foster families," she said. "Meeting these needs allows foster parents to use their funds saved to help their children adapt to their new home."
Families can visit the Foster Closet of Michigan self-storage unit at 902 Victory Drive on Wednesdays from 3 to 7 p.m. Regular hours may increase if there is sufficient demand, Krause said. Families can also visit by appointment. Shoppers may be required to show paperwork proving they are foster parents, the source reported.
Foster Closet of Michigan launched four years ago in four counties and has since expanded to 17 branches.
Future plans for the Livingston County branch include special events that will benefit foster children. The charity is also accepting donations from businesses, community members and other organizations. In particular need are personal-hygiene products, Krause said.
Founded in 1986, Best Self Storage is a family-owned business operating five self-storage facilities in Michigan.
