Despite past victories over sales-tax legislation, self-storage operators in Illinois face another new bill that would tax their business as a service. The Illinois Self Storage Association and national Self Storage Association are working with lobbyists to fight it.

Introduced to the Illinois legislature last month, House Bill 3501 adds mini storage to a list of services that could be subject to a 6.25 percent base sales-tax rate. Local governments may impose additional tax resulting in a combined tax rate ranging from 6.25 percent to 11.5 percent in certain business districts.

The bill, sponsored by Republican Dave Winters of Springfield, was assigned to the Revenue & Finance Committee on March 1.

Other services at risk in the state include landscaping, pet grooming, marine services and others.
