GU Self Storage has opened for business in Harmon, Guam. The two-story, climate-controlled facility comprises 40,000 square feet in 270 units inside the former Guam Power Authority (GPA) building. It has an onsite partnership with Mail Hub, which sells a full line of moving and packing supplies in addition to offering postal and office services, according to a source.

The storage facility is compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act and offers unit sizes from 25 to 540 square feet, according to a GU press release. It features a fully covered loading/unloading entrance and parking area as well as vehicle access on the second level. Security features include barbed-wire perimeter fencing, keycode access, LED lighting and more than 100 video cameras.

Tenants have access to an assortment of carts, dollies, hand trucks and pallet jacks. They can also use their mobile devices as keypads to access secured dates and doors, the release stated.

GU’s collaboration with Mail Hub will provide storage customers with access to a conference room, business workstations, document services and a notary public, according to sources.

A grand-opening ceremony on May 6 included facility tours and special guests, including Lt. Gov. Ray Tenorio. Leonard P. Calvo, vice president of GU Self Storage affiliate Calvo Enterprises Inc., and Dan Paulino, manager of Mail Hub, spoke to attendees about the project.

The self-storage property is near existing retail, including a McDonald’s fast-food restaurant.

When Calvo Enterprises announced the project in 2015, it indicated a portion of the GPA parking area would be converted to 60,000 square feet of drive-up self-storage.

Based in Hagåtña, Guam, Calvo Enterprises is a diversified company with interests in alcohol and beverage distribution, building materials, insurance, real estate management and sales, and various retail projects including a drug store and supermarkets, according to a Guam Chamber of Commerce listing.
