Portia Lewis of Fayetteville, N.C., aired her grief to local Eyewitness News after finding her self-storage unit overrun with mice and having to throw away many personal items. Lewis, who has been storing her goods at an Uncle Bob’s Self Storage facility for several months, recently found mice and mice feces in her unit. In addition, many of her items had been chewed through.

When Lewis approached the facility manager, she was told there was nothing the company could do and someone must have food in their unit, attracting the rodents. An Uncle Bob’s rep told Eyewitness News the company takes pride in its properties and uses pest control to prevent such incidents.

Uncle Bob’s has moved Lewis’ salvageable items to other units and offered to clean her goods, but she is demanding compensation. Lewis did not buy the company’s tenant insurance; the insurance does not cover rodent damage anyway.

The facility’s pest-control company said it treats the property frequently. While it can spray and lay traps outside units, it cannot treat inside rented units.
