Facilitys Gun Thief Convicted

A Daly City, Calif., man was convicted in federal court in San Francisco for his part in stealing 127 guns from Annies Attic Self Storage, Millbrae, Calif., the U.S. Department of Justice reported. Two other defendants pleaded guilty. The thefts occurred shortly after the firearms were stored in December 2001. The weapons were discovered missing after Fresno, Calif., police recovered one during an arrest in August 2004 and traced the firearm back to its owner.


Florida Storage Biz on the Rise

In Brevard County, Fla., 129 businesses covering 275 acres fall in the mini-warehouse category that includes self-storage facilities. At least six more are in the works. Titusville, Fla., has 19 self-storage facilities. From Mims, Fla., where a 138-unit storage business opened last year, to Palm Bay, Fla., which has five existing facilities, folks are storing their goods in ever increasing numbers.


Poor Security Blamed for High Theft Rate

In the past five years, Rochester, N.Y., area consumers have reported more than 200 burglaries at local storage facilities. Poor security is blamed for a large number of these thefts, according to a WHEC TV news broadcast. Some facilities have been robbed more than once. Brockport Mini Storage had 36 burglaries between July 2003 and the end of 2005. Greece Ridge Mini Storage was also a popular target with 13 thefts. East Avenue Public Storage had 16 break-ins in the past five years.


Space, The Financial Frontier

What started out as a quest for Pittsburgh resident Jim Bollman to un-clutter his garage and store his mother-in-laws possessions resulted in a new mobile storage company, Space-to-Go. The company is the latest local player in the fast-growing, self-storage market. Phil Duvall, Bollmans partner in Space-to-Go, said the company has an advantage over other storage providers because its aluminum and fiberglass bins come in various sizes to fit easily in Pittsburghs small driveways and alleys.
