A $1 million economic-stimulus loan being sought by Main Street Birmingham Inc. could make room for new self-storage and retail space Birmingham, Ala.
 
The nonprofit organization is facilitating an incentive package that will go before the Birmingham City Council’s finance committee on Monday. If the loan is approved, the group will move forward with a $3.4 million redevelopment plan―led by Birmingham’s The Shopping Center Group―that will turn a 54,000-square-foot empty store into climate-controlled storage.
 
Three outparcels for restaurant and retail are also planned. The project is expected to create 110 full-time jobs and retain 20 jobs.
 
The site was formerly home to Bruno’s Supermarket for years, before it closed due to bankruptcy earlier in the year.
 
Main Street Birmingham is under contract to the City of Birmingham to implement the BEACON program for neighborhood commercial district revitalization.
