Westy Self Storage, which operates 15 facilities in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York, will host a one-night-only musical at its New Hyde Park, N.Y., location on March 16. “Going, Going, Gondoliers” will be performed by the Gilbert & Sullivan Light Opera Co. of Long Island. Serving as the launch for the 2019 production of “The Gondoliers,” the event will feature highlights from upcoming shows, according to the source.
Admission for the show, which will start at 7 p.m., is $15 and includes refreshments. Proceeds will benefit the opera company.
“This concert is partly to help our audience get into the mood for ‘The Gondoliers,’ but it’s also to help us get in the mood,” said Terry Hochler, a Light Opera Co. member. The artists will perform songs from or those inspired by Italy and its culture. Genres will include Broadway shows, folk, opera, pop and more.
“There’s something about Italy—the flowing language, the tradition of music, opera, painting, sculpture—that’s unlike anywhere else in the world,” Hochler said. “To us ‘The Gondoliers’ is like a chance to vacation in Italy for a couple of hours, and we want ‘Going, Going Gondoliers’ to help our audience share that experience.”
Also known as “The King of Barataria,” the production is a savoy opera featuring music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. It was performed at the Savoy Theatre in London from Dec. 7, 1889, to June 30, 1891.
Established in 1954, the Light Opera Co. is devoted exclusively to the promotion and performance of the works of Gilbert & Sullivan. Its performers are all volunteers.
Founded in 1990 by The Arredondo Family, Westy Self Storage is headquartered in Stamford, Conn. It operates four facilities in Connecticut, four in New Jersey and seven in New York.
