The recent thefts at two self-storage facilities have been turned into positive public relations opportunities.
After equipment for an annual festival was stolen last week from Cornella Brothers Mini Storage in Canon City, Colo., one of the festivals organizers reached out to the community for help. Cornella Brothers Mini Storage had donated the space to the Senior Fun Fest for several years.
The items, which had been collected for more than 20 years, included giant boxing gloves, clothespins, balloons, buckets, inner tubes and other items. Larry Weaver, who has been involved in the annual spring event for several years, is asking the public to help police find the thieves and to be on the lookout for the stolen goods. Weaver is also hoping the community will donate money to replace the stolen items.
A self-storage operator in Springfield, Mo., is using a theft at her facility as a chance to share storage safety tips with her community.
Haseltine Mini Storage recently had a break-in in which a thief cut through the facilitys fence and burglarized more than 12 self-storage units. The thief also snipped the wire on the facilitys surveillance camera.
Marlena Harmon, co-owner of Haseltine Mini Storage, noted disc locks better protect units from break-ins. She also emphasized the importance of having self-storage tenant insurance, keeping track of whats in the unit with photos and checking the unit often. In addition to sharing her security tips, Harmon is considering upgrading the facilitys security measures.
