U-Haul moving and self-storage customers in Canada have donated $507,000 to Tree Canada, a nonprofit dedicated to planting and protecting trees, the company recently reported. Since partnering with U-Haul International Inc. in 2011, Tree Canada has used 203,000 customer donations to plant or protect 81,437 trees, which will absorb about 90,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide, according to a press release. The partnership includes reforestation and urban tree-canopy projects.

“The alignment of values between Tree Canada and U-Haul is a strong indicator of our commitment to Canadian citizens," said Jake Spelic, U-Haul area district vice president.

“We are grateful for the outstanding contribution U-Haul has made to advance our Grow Clean Air program,” added Danielle St-Aubin, CEO of Tree Canada. “U-Haul continues to show its commitment to actively participate in environmental strategies to mitigate climate change and improve air quality. Together, we're improving the lives of Canadians.”

Some urban projects include planting edible trees as a part of the nonprofit’s Greening Canada’s School Grounds initiative. The organization will conduct an edible-tree planting event on Sept. 12 at Saint Mark Catholic Elementary School in Kitchener, Ontario, the release stated.

Established in 1945 and based in Phoenix, U-Haul operates more than 1,600 self-storage facilities across North America. It’s portfolio of owned and managed properties comprises 60.7 million square feet of storage space.

Tree Canada specializes in tree-nurturing education, programs and research. Its efforts include the restoration of tree coverage in areas hit by natural disasters and guiding communities in managing urban forests. The organization has planted more than 82 million trees across Canada.
